超低電力・動画用・反射型フルカラー液晶ディスプレイの開発

研究概要

薄型軽量超低消費電力という特長を有する反射型液晶ディスプレイに関して、高品位化、カラー化が望まれている。ところが、反射型のカラー液晶ディスプレイは、カラー化による明るさの低下のために実現は不可能であろうと考えられてきた。これに対して、本研究の研究者等は、液晶の光学的特性と反射板の拡散特性を制御することにより、必要な視野角範囲に拡散光を制御する設計指針を確立し、基本的問題を解決してきた。
本研究では、さらにこの結果を基に、高速動画を高品位なフルカラー表示で実現できる反射型液晶表示方式を実現するために、R-OCBモードをアクティブマトリクス駆動に組み合わせることとした。この優れた表示特性を実現するために、理論解析と実験により、この液晶モードの設計理論を確立し、実証実現することを目的とした。
まず、構成する素子の光学特性を解析するために、液晶及び光学複屈折フィルム、偏光子の光学特性の入射角度依存性と波長依存性について図式的に取り扱うことのできる新しい解析方法を確立した。これにより、完全に理論設計ができるようになり、ディスプレイ設計に必要なパラメータを総合的に最適化した設計を行った。これにより、白表示では高い透過率と視野によらず着色が生じないことを可能にした。また、黒表示では光の漏れを極限まで抑えて高コントラストを広視野角で実現する液晶及び二軸性の光学フィルム、偏光子の設計パラメータを理論及び数値解析によって導出した。これにより、広視野角化、高コントラスト化するための設計指針を明らかにした。
以上の設計指針に基づいて、実際に液晶及び二軸性の光学フィルム等を設計し、視角による色変化やコントラストの低下が生じない高性能の液晶ディスプレイを試作した。これにより、-30度入射光に対して視野角0〜50度の広い視野角範囲でカラー写真と同程度の明るさと、カラー写真以上の高コントラスト特性を実現し、優れた動画像表示が可能な高性能の反射型液晶ディスプレイを実現できることを示した。この性能は従来のバックライト付高品位ディスプレイと十分対向できる可能性を示している。
