密度揺らぎの制御による超低損失ファイバ用ガラスの開発

研究概要

マルチメディア時代を迎えるにあたって、中継距離の増大による通信コストの低減や、通信網の拡大のために、現在実用化されている石英ファイバを凌ぐ低損失性を有するファイバの開発が必須である。従来、ファイバの伝送損失の主要因であるレーリー散乱を低減化させるために、ガラス組成探索が活発に行われてきた。本研究グループでは、これらの研究とは一線を画し、ガラスが本来有する究極の伝送特性を得ることを目的として、石英ガラスの液体〜ガラス状態での諸物性の研究を進めてきた。本研究では、レーリー散乱の原因である密度揺らぎを制御するためにガラス転移近傍の構造緩和過程を詳しく調べ、以下の結果を得た。
1。 凍結した密度揺らぎの構造緩和過程及びその不純物効果
OHやCl、Naなどの不純物は、粘性流動に支配されたα緩和を促進する。さらにこれらの不純物により副緩和過程が生ずることを光散乱およびFTIR測定より明らかにした。
2。 副構造緩和過程における不純物の役割
副緩和は、不純物の拡散による局所的な構造緩和に起因することを誘電緩和測定より明らかにした。これらの知見をもとに、不純物を利用した構造緩和制御法を確立した。この制御法は、超低散乱ガラスの開発に直結する基盤技術であると同時に、耐紫外ファイバや超耐熱ガラスの開発に有用であることが明らかとなった。
