海棲哺乳類の資源管理と生息環境に関する基礎的研究

研究概要

平成12年度には、本研究課題で得られた研究成果をもとに英文論文7編、和文論文2編、総説2編を発表すると同時に、国際会議の特別講演4回、国内会議の特別講演2回、国際学会1回、国内学会9回、および一般講演6回の発表を行った。研究内容は、イシイルカやバイカルアザラシなどの海棲哺乳類の生活史を中心とする研究と、海棲哺乳類を指標とした有害化学物質(有機塩素系化合物、有機スズ化合物、重金属類など)による海洋汚染のモニタリング研究を中心としたものである。なかでも、イシイルカが餌生物のバイオマスの変化に応じて主要な餌生物の種類をスイッチさせている現象を明らかにした論文は、国際的に極めて高い関心を得た。バイカル湖に生息しているバイカルアザラシの生活史を正確な年齢査定の方法を用いて解析した論文は、国内外の研究者からも高い評価を得た。同時に、バイカルアザラシを通じてバイカル湖の環境汚染を推察し、バイカル湖南部のパルプ工場排水がバイカル湖を汚染し、バイカルアザラシの生存を危うくしているとの私たちの調査結果は、世界の人々に驚きをもって受け入れられた。そのほかに、海洋汚染の要因となる未知なる化学物質(tri(4-chlorophenyl)methaneとtri-(4-chlorophenyl)methanol)の挙動を明らかにした研究は、世界中の研究者から注目されている。平成12年4月に国立マレーシア大学で開催された「内分泌攪乱化学物質の国際会議」では、「海棲哺乳類の生活史に基づいた有害化学物質の蓄積特性の研究」を紹介した。平成12年5月に開催されたUNESCO主催の会議「カスピ海とその周辺域の環境」では、「カスピカイアザラシの生活史特性値と有害化学物質の蓄積特性」を紹介した。これらの講演を通じて、海棲哺乳動物を指標にした海洋環境のモニタリング研究の重要性を国際的に印象づけた。
