海洋大循環モデルの高精度化に向けた乱流拡散率の全球的マッピング

研究概要

数値モデルで再現される熱塩海洋大循環のパターンやその強さは、モデル内で仮定される鉛直拡散パラメータKvの値に依存して大きく変化する。最近の研究結果によれば、観測されるような循環量を再現するには温度躍層の下部でKv〜1.0cm^2/sが必要とされているが、実際の海洋観測で得られる乱流拡散の値はこれよりはるかに小さくKv-0.1cm^2/sの程度である。
Gregg(1989)は、乱流消散率は鉛直波長約10mの近慣性鉛直シアーの大きさでスケーリングできるという結果を観測から得ている。海洋中では、内部波の非線形干渉(P.S.I.)に伴うエネルギーカスケードが働くため、この鉛直シアーの強さは鉛直低波数・周波数ω〜2f(f:慣性周波数)のエネルギーレベルと連動して変化する(Hibiya et al.,1998)。これは、鉛直低波数・周波数ω〜2fの内部波エネルギーの時空間分布という、より把握しやすい情報から、乱流拡散率のグローバルなマッピングが可能となることを示している。
本研究では、北太平洋を例に、大気擾乱により励起される鉛直低波数・ω〜2fの内部波エネルギーに注目することで、乱流拡散率の時空間分布に関する考察を行った。数値実験の結果、冬期に中緯度帯(30°N〜45ﾟN)を伝播していく低気圧により励起された鉛直低波数の近慣性波が南へ伝播し10°Nから15ﾟNに達することで、その周波数がこの緯度帯の慣性周波数の2〜3倍となるため、内部波の非線形干渉(P.S.I.)が働き、乱流混合過程に効率的なエネルギー供給が行われることが示唆された。このような乱流拡散率の著しい時空間分布を考えると、主に夏から秋にかけて行われてきた乱流観測によるKv〜0.1cm^2/sという値は全球的代表値としては考えにくいことが推察できる。
