研究概要

従来の地球科学及び生物科学を支配してきた概念「地球は変化し続ける」に対し、当研究では「地球上の種々の現象は種々のフィードバック機構により制御さねり週去35億年問基本的には大きく変化して果なかった」との新しい概念を提唱し検証することが目標である。本年度は米国,オーストラリアの研究協力者と共同で,大古代・原生代の地層の発達する北西オーストラリア,ピルバラ地域及びハマスレー地域の地質調査および岩石試料の採集を行った。地質調査はハマスレー縞状鉄鉱層をはじめ、原始地球の炭酸ガス固定の証拠とされるドロマイト層を採集し、炭素と酸素の同位体から炭酸ガス固定の生物の役割を考察した。Mt.McRea shaleの硫黄同位体比を測定し26億年前の海洋は既に酸化的になっており、硫酸還元バクテリアが酸化的な海水から硫酸イオンを摂取し黄鉄鉱をつくっていたことを明らかにすると共に、バクテリアの種類の特定のために炭素化合物の有機化学的性質を明らかにした。また27億年前のMt.Roe玄武岩層に発達した古土壌とされる粘土化帯を調査した。野外および室内実験の結果は還元的な熱水変質帯でこの地層から27億年前は還元的な大気であるとする従来の説が間違えであることを指摘した。North Poleでは海底熱水活動を調べ当時の海水の組成を推定した。豪州滞在中2日間を費やし西オーストラリア大学において太古代の鉱床と原始地球と題するコロキウムを開催した。オーストラリア各地からの集まった地質学者達あわせて70名と当研究の成果について討論した。
