深海堀削試料解析・孔内孔内計測による地球ダイナミックスの研究

研究概要

本計画は堀削研究線ジョイデス・レゾリューションを用いて、深海底の堀削を行い、海底堆積物と岩石の柱状試料(コア)を連続的に採取し、また検層装置(ロッキング)などによって地殻の諸性質を直接測定することにより、地球内部および地球環境ダイナミックスの2大テーマの解明を目指す国際共同研究である。日本からは、堀削船の各航海に研究者を乗船・参加させて船上での共同研究を推進し、また研究船白鳳丸を用いて掘削候補地点の事前海底探査を行う。
平成11年においては、日本近海から南大洋にかけての堀削を行い次のような成果が上がっている。
(1)太平洋プレート海洋地殻上部の化学組成と物性の研究
国際深海堀削計画Leg185はSite801で海洋地殻を約450m堀削さらにSite1149では海洋地殻の堆積層全部(410m)と変質した海洋基盤(133m)の堀削を行った。Site1149はSite801のように中期白亜紀の火山砕屑物と石灰質なものも持たない。この違いは伊豆-ボニンとマリアナの2つの島弧から噴出される火成岩の地球化学的な差のいくつかを説明するかもしれない。
(2)堀削による地下深部生物圏の研究
第185次航海では,地下生物圏(Deep Biosphere)に関する研究のための汚染状況試験が行われた。この結果掘削に時間がかかる分,汚染を受けやすい環境に試料がさらされるということがわかった。また微生物的な痕跡が170Maの火山ガラス中に観察され,これは極端に深い地下深部の生物圏(海底下930m)が活動的であるという興味深い証拠である。
(3)日本海溝における沈み込み帯ダイナミックスと古海洋環境の研究
Leg186は,Site1150およびSite1151において水深2000mに海底下1200m堀削を行い均質な珪藻質シルト質泥および泥岩を回収と孔内検層を行なった。今回得られた堆積物は、東北日本の層序・古生物・古海洋変動・テクトニクス等を論じるうえでの貴重な試料となる。
(4)海底孔内地球物理複合観測所のシステムと設置
本研究では、海底孔内観測システムの設置をSite1150およびSite1151において行い、9月にROVを用いてシステムを起動し,長期観測に入った。
ODPの活動に関しては、理事会、科学委員会、各パネル・委員会へ出席し、日本の成果の発表と計画への意志反映を行った。
