深海掘削試料解析・孔内長期観測による地球ダイナミックスの研究

研究概要	本計画は掘削研究船ジョイデス・レゾリューションを用いて、深海底の掘削を行い、海底堆積物と岩石の柱状試料(コア)を連続的に採取し、また検層装置(ロッキング)などによって地殻の諸性質を直接測定することにより、地球内部および地球環境ダイナミックスの2大テーマの解明を目指す国際共同研究である。日本からは、掘削船の各航海に研究者を乗船・参加させて船上での共同研究を推進し、また研究船白鳳丸を用いて掘削候補地点の事前海底探査を行う。平成12年度においては、日本近海、赤道太平洋周辺の掘削を行い次ぎの成果を上げた。 (1)南海トラフにおける付加体の変形の研究南海トラフはフィリピン海プレートが西南日本へ年間約4cmの速度で沈み込む場所である。ここでは、プレートの運んできた堆積物がはぎ取られて、陸側へ押し付けられて、付加体を作っている。ODP第190次航海では、室戸沖と足摺沖において2つの横断線(トランセクト)を横切る掘削を行なった。 A.南海トラフ付加体の急激な成長南海トラフ陸側斜面を覆う堆積物の年代と付加された堆積物の性質から付加体は、過去200万年の間に少なくとも40km、最大55km、トラフ側へと成長した。 B.プレート境界滑り面の発達室戸トランセクトと足摺トランセクトのおいて、デコルマン滑り面の位置の特定を行なった。その結果、滑り面は、両者で同一の地層(600万年前の泥岩層)に存在することが分かった。 C.沈む込む堆積物と地震活動室戸沖では、堆積物は含水粘土鉱物をほとんど含んでいないのに対して足摺沖では多量に含まれる。この水はプレート境界の摩擦の大きさを左右し、地震活動に関係する可能性が指摘できる。 (2)巨大海台の形成過程の研究オントンジャワ海台において基盤玄武岩の掘削を行い、これが120Maのものであり、また熱水変質の少ないこと、海上で形成された証拠がないことが分かった。このことは、白亜紀の地球環境研究に大きな意義を持つ。 (3)海洋環境、地下微生物圏の研究南海トラフ、赤道太平洋などで黒潮変動、深層循環、地下微生物圏の研究で成果が上がった。 (4)孔内地震観測シャッキー海台付近で孔内地震観測ステーションを設置した。
