研究概要

星間分子雲は、星、星団を形成する場であり、銀河の進化を論ずるうえできわめて重要な天体である。本研究による、南天の分子ガスの系統的探査により新たな知見が数多く得られている。本年度の結果の一端を以下にまとめる。
1.多数のスーパーシェルの発見:約20個の超新星爆発よって形成された巨大なシェル=「カリーナ・フレア」(昨年度本研究で発見)と同様のスーパーシェル候補天体を15個あまり発見した。特に「ケンタウルス領域」では、分子雲の視線速度からシェル候補分子雲までの距離を推定し、超新星爆発を起こす大質量星の形成領域とよい位置相関があることを示した。本結果により、理論的に示唆されていた超新星爆発による銀画面と銀河ハロー間の物質循環の重要性が観測的に裏付けられた。
2.帆座超新星残骸と相互作用する分子ガス:太陽系に最も近い「帆座」超新星残骸全域にわたり分子ガスの詳細観測を行い、X線・可視光・中性水素輝線データとの比較を行った。その結果超新星残骸と分子ガスが相互作用していることが広範囲にわたって示唆され、超新星残骸の成長・進化と電離衝撃波の物理を研究する上で重要な結果を与えた。
3.大マゼラン雲のスーパージャイアントシェルに付随する分子雲の発見:大マゼラン雲のスーパージャイアントシェルLMC4およびLMC5周辺に十万太陽質量程度の分子雲を多数検出し、星団やHII領域がシェルに面する側に分布する傾向があることを初めて示した。またLMC4とLMC5で挟まれた領域には百万太陽質量程度の大きな分子雲の存在することも明らかにした。これらの結果は、シェルの膨張により分子雲および星形成の誘発されている可能性を示唆し、誘発された星の超新星爆発でシェルの膨張が押し進められ、シェルが成長するというシナリオが考えられる。
