研究概要

本国際学術研究は、日本と英国が協力して、英国ラザフォード・アップルトン研究所の大強度スポレーション・パルス中性子源施設ISISに単結晶用高性能チョッパー型分光器MAPSを建設し、中性子散乱による先端的物質科学研究を行うためのものである。日本側は主として中性子検出器の開発及び設置を担当する。分光器の建設は平成9年より3ヵ年掛けて行う。平成10年、11年度は分光器の建設を行い、平成12年度は分光器全体の調整を行う。この共同建設作業と並行して、すでにISISに設置されてある中性子分光器を用いた先端的共同研究を進めている。なお、本協力事業の協力協定は、平成8年12月23日に高エネルギー加速器研究機構(KEK)と英国中央研究所審議会(CCLRC)の間で締結した。
平成10年度は、MAPS分光器の共同設置作業、中性子ビームによる遮蔽等に関する試験、及び、ISISに設置されている他の分光器を用いた、磁性体、非晶質、フラクタル、生体高分子、酸化物高温超伝導体等の静的および動的構造の解明のための実験研究を実施した。平成10年度内にラザフォード・アップルトン研究所で行われた実験課題数は23件であった。長期滞在者1名を含み、日本側から本協力研究に派遣した人員は24名におよんだ。また、研究打ち合わせのため英国より2名を招聘した。
