研究概要	免疫系と神経系のクロストークの研究のため、カナダMcMaster大学のBienenstock教授と共同で、アレルギーに関与する好塩基球の培養細胞と新生児マウスの初代培養神経節細胞との共存培養を行った。神経成長因子の存在下で数日間培養すると、神経節から神経突起が伸長し、伸長した神経突起は好塩基球と特異的に接着し、シナプス様の構造を形成した。そこで、ブラジキニンやサソリ毒を共存培養系に添加して、同時に、共焦点レーザ顕微鏡で細胞内カルシウムイオン濃度の変化を計測した。その結果、神経細胞が活性化され細胞内カルシウムイオンの濃度が上昇するとともに、数秒のlag-timeの後に、好塩基球の細胞内カルシウムイオン濃度が上昇した。ブラジキニンやサソリ毒を単独で添加した際には好塩基球の細胞内カルシウムイオン濃度の上昇は起こらないので、ここで観測した好塩基球のカルシウムイオン濃度の上昇は、神経細胞の活性化にともない神経細胞からの液性因子を介して、好塩基球の活性化が誘導されているものと推察された。そして、抗体と受容体のアンタゴニストを使った実験から、神経ペプチド一種であるサブスタンスPが神経細胞から好塩基球への情報伝達に関与していることを明らかにした。一方、好塩基球を抗原で刺激すると、好塩基球の活性化の後に、神経細胞のカルシウムイオン濃度上昇を誘導する逆方向のシグナルが観測された。これらの実験は、免疫細胞と神経細胞の間で相互のコミュニケーションが行なわれていることを示した世界で最初の研究であると考えられた。実験結果は、免疫系が生体の環境変化に対するアンテナの役割を果たし、生体内の環境情報を中枢神経システムに伝達する一方、中枢神経からは免疫系をコントロールする指令が働いていること推察させる根拠と考えられた。また、諸外国での関連分野に関する調査研究は国際研究、を遂行するにあたり多大の貢献をなした。
