研究概要	糖鎖は糖タンパク質、糖脂質、プロテオグリカンなどの重要な構成成分であり、生体内で多種多様な分子群を形成している。この分野を包括する糖鎖生物学はポストゲノム研究の中心的課題の一つと考えられ、本研究領域の果たす役割は益々大きくなってきている。本研究領域は二つの計画研究班、谷口を班長とする第1班「糖鎖遺伝子による細胞リモデリング」と村松を班長とする第2班「糖鎖シグナルによる細胞間コミュニケーションの制御」からなり、これらに属する計画研究班班員および公募の班員間相互の交流、連携の促進、研究成果のとりまとめと刊行などをはかるため領域代表者を班長とする総括班をおいている。本年度はニュースレターの刊行、合同班会議、公開シンポジウムの開催などをおこなったが、とくに公開シンポジウムでは海外よりこの分野における第1人者3名を招き、これまで以上に活発な議論が行われ、各班員ともそれぞれの課題について非常に有意義な示唆をえることができた。また、本年度は国際糖鎖生物学会議(GlycoXV)が東京で開催され、総括班の班員も中心的な役割を担ったが、本研究領域の各班員と来日した多数の海外研究者との共同研究を含む研究交流や討論を促す機会もえることができた。このような活動を通して、班員間が相互に補強しあうような環境を提供し、各課題をより効率的にすすめられるよう配慮した。実際に班員間の共同研究によって大きな進展のみられた課題も多数あり、ゴードンカンファレンスや国際糖鎖生物学会議、国際糖質化学シンポジウムでも高い評価を受けている。
