研究概要

13世紀初頭英国西中部で成立のAncrene Wisse(『修道女案内』以下AW)は「移行期」のほぼ最終端に位置し、「英語散文の連続性」の問題を解明、検証する上で、きわめて重要である。本研究課題はAWコーパスを提供し、13世紀初頭から15世紀にかけての英国西中部方言域における音韻、綴字、形態、統語法、句読法、語彙、意味領域、文体等にわたる通時的研究、方言研究、ひいては社会史的、文化史的研究全般に対し、研究のための確固たる基礎を提供することを目的とする。そのパラレル・テクストはその時期の方言域の英語史的言語変化情報を一目瞭然な形で提供する。またAWには同時代の羅仏訳があり、それらとの比較参照を容易にすることは当時の言語生活の状況の実態を理解する上できわめて有効であろう。AWコーパスに呼応して各方面において同種の正・異写本パラレル・テクスト・コーパス作成作業が13世紀の他の作品群、また、その前後の作品について行われ、それらとの比較が可能となるとき、さらに資料的価値が高められ、「移行期」およびその前後の時期の英語史研究はその厳密性を飛躍的に増すこととなるはずである。Kobayashi et al.(2000)は『アングロ・サクソン年代記』について、Kubouchi,ed.(2000)はWulfstanの説教集他についての正・異写本パラレル・テクストを提供しようとする試みである。
本年度は1997年公刊のElectronic Parallel Diplomatic Manuscript Text of the AW,Preface,Parts I&IIの改訂作業、残り部分の入力、ならびにPart IIIを加えた増補改訂版の公刊準備作業およびPart IVの写本テクスト調査を重点的に行った。成果は上記の改訂増補版に加え、Ono(1999),Scahill(2000),Tanabe(2000),Kubouchi(2000)のほか田辺が日本中世英語英文学会第15回全国大会(1999.12)のシンポジウムにおいてAWの異写本パラレルテキストの有効性について発表した。なお、池上、Scahill、久保内が現地調査を行った。
