研究概要

古英語から中英語へのいわゆる「移行期」は英語の受難期でもあり、文献が乏しくこれまで研究は困難とされてきた。その研究の可能性を探る試みは異写本資料の比較研究を援用するとき大きな進展を見た。英語史研究の大きな課題である「英語散文の連続性」の問題の解明もこの「移行期」の言語状況の解明なしには不可能で、異写本資料比較研究の果たす役割はその意味でも重要である。13世紀初頭英国西中部方言域で成立のAncrene Wisse『修道女案内』(以下AW)は「移行期」のほぼ最終端に位置し、「英語散文の連続性」の問題を解明、検証する上で、きわめて重要であることは多言を要しない。本研究課題はそのAWコーパスの作成を課題とする。比較的長編であり異写本資料の数の多さのためなお時間を必要とするが、完成の暁には、13-15世紀の英国西中部方言域における言語的実態の通時的・共時的研究、ひいては社会史的、文化史的研究全般に対し、研究のための確固たる基盤を提供することは明らかである。そのパラレル・テクストはその時期の方言域の英語史的言語変化・変異に関する情報を一目瞭然な形で提供する。パイロット・スタディの役割を担うこのAWコーパスに呼応して各方面において同種の正・異写本パラレル・テクスト・コーパス作成作業が13世紀の他の作品群、また、その前後の時期の作品について行われ、それらとの比較が可能となるとき、さらに資料的価値が高められるばかりでなく、「移行期」およびその前後の時期の英語史研究はその厳密性を飛躍的に増すこととなるはずである。
主要な研究成果は、Electronic Parallel Diplomatic Manuscript Texts of AW,Preface and Parts 1-3:A printed trial version(2000)およびElectronic Parallel Diplomatic Manuscript Texts of AW,Part 4:A printed trial version(2001)である。永らくその完成が待たれたVernon写本テクストの半校訂本が、ようやく2000年末にA.Zettersten,B.Diensberg共編でEETSから出版されたが、その参考文献書目には前者があげられている。その完成に貢献できたことは望外の喜びである。
