巨大コロイド結晶の電気光学効果の発現機構

研究概要

ポリスチレンやシリカ等の単分散コロイド粒子により構成されるコロイド結晶において、電気光学効果の発現機構をコロイド結晶の構造や粘弾性特性から調査した。具体的にはまず、発現された巨大コロイド結晶のキャラクタリゼーションにより結晶の格子定数等を確定した後、時間分割高速反射スペクトル測定による非線形光学効果の測定、そして静的・動的光散乱測定によるコロイド粒子の運動モード評価を行った。散乱光強度の角度分布から求められる静的構造因子、散乱光強度の時間相関関数から得られる見かけの拡散係数を、コロイド粒子濃度を変化させながら測定した。これらの結果以下の事実が明らかとなった。
1.コロイド結晶は3つの粒子運動モードを持つが、それぞれの運動モードが周波数分散を持ち、印加電場に協奏的に応答する。
2.コロイド粒子が持つ電気二重層が非線形的な分極を起こす。つまり通常の誘電体における非線形分極と同様に、μmに近い粒子間隔を持つコロイド結晶においては、今回のようなかなり低い印加電場でも非線形応答を示す場合がある。
3.結晶格子間隔の電場による変化が、ブラッグ反射ピークの波長シフトを引き起こし、観測光学系の波長感度分散とのかねあいで二次高調波として観測される。この後さらに、電極付セルによるフォトニクス素子、具体的には高調波発生用非線形素子、電場変調素子、位相可変偏光板、チューナブルフィルター、波長変換表示素子等としての実用度評価も行った。
