電子論による水素吸蔵合金の理論的な特性予測とそれに基づく新合金の設計と開発

研究概要

本研究では、広く一般的な立場から水素吸蔵合金の基本特性を理解するとともに、新しい水素吸蔵合金を創製するための指針を得ることを目的に、代表的な水素吸蔵合金(LaNi_5,ZrMn_2,Mg_2Ni,TiFe)の電子状態の計算を行った。さらに、水素吸蔵合金における水素化物形成元素(A)と非形成元素(B)のそれぞれの役割について調べた。
電子構造の計算には、分子軌道法の一つであるDV-Xαクラスター法を用いた。計算に用いたクラスター模型は、各合金の結晶構造に基づいて構築した。一連の計算より、水素が入る小さな金属多面体の原子間の化学結合および水素化に伴う結晶構造の変化により、水素吸蔵合金の平衡水素圧や水素化物の安定性が理解できることがわかった。また、水素吸蔵合金中の水素は、水素化物形成元素(A)ではなく、水素化物非形成元素(B)の近くおり、B-H結合を形成していることが明らかになった。例えば、LaNi_5では、水素はLaよりもNiと強く結合している。水素との親和力が弱いB原子と結合しているために、水素吸蔵合金では、水素の放出過程が容易に活性化できるものと考えられる。さらに、このB-H結合は、A原子が近くにいるときに強くなることが明らかになった。この意味では、A、B元素がともに水素吸蔵合金に必須の元素であると言える。
今後、最適なA,Bの組み合わせやその組成比について、さらに検討していく予定である。
