研究概要

平成13年度においては、日本近海、太平洋周辺の掘削を行い次ぎの成果を上げた。
(1)海洋底変動の研究
沖ノ鳥島海域のフィリピン海プレートに孔内長期地震観測ステーションを設置した。これは西太平洋地球物理観測ネットワークの中核をなす観測点となる。また東太平洋において将来海底ケーブルと接続するための孔内観測ステーション用掘削を行った。天皇海山列を掘削し、特に古地磁気学的研究からホットスポットの位置が従来考えられていたより不安性であることを立証した。
(2)プレート沈み込み帯の研究
南海トラフにおいて掘削同時検層(Logging While Drilling)を行ない、デコルマの性質について重要な情報が取得された。また、孔内長期間隙水圧観測ステーションの設置がなされ、プレート沈み込みに伴う間隙水の移動や付加体の力学的挙動について重要な知見が得られることが期待できる。
(3)海洋古環境の研究
オーストラリア東岸のマリオン海台において掘削を行ない、炭酸塩岩プラットフォームの形成過程を研究した。北西太平洋シャッキーライズにおいてチョーク層の連続コアを探取し、白亜紀〜古第三紀の太平洋の古環境変動史を研究した。また東太平洋赤道地域の掘削により、古第三紀の古環境変動史を研究し、5000万年前の温暖期の原因に熱水活動の関与が示唆された。
