電子・陽子衝突による素粒子構造の研究の総括

研究概要

ドイツ電子シンクロトロン研究所(DESY)に建設された電子・陽子衝突型加速器HERAを用いて、レプトンとクォーク間の相互作用を精密に測定することがこの研究の目的である。測定に用いる実験装置は、我々を含む12カ国の国際共同実験グループZEUSにより建設し運転中であり、さらなる改良が進められている。
今年度は、陽電子・電子衝突の実験を年度当初より9月までほぼ連続して行なった。これに合わせて実験の遂行とデータの解析に必要な人員をDESYに派遣した。データ収集は順調に進み、この2年間で積算ルミノシティ67pb^<-1>を得た。陽子ビームのエネルギーを以前の820GeVから920GeVに上げることで、より高エネルギーの衝突が可能となり、新粒子探索等の感度を上げることができた。今回取得したデータと平成10年度までに収集した陽電子・陽子及び電子・陽子の衝突データをもとに解析を進めており、既に暫定的な結果を6件の国際会議で発表している。
前年度に公表した高い運動量移行領域の中性流及び荷電流深非弾性散乱反応の断面積のデータと標準模型との比較から、未知の相互作用に対してどの程度の制限を加えるかを議論した論文を発表するとともに、その結果から、陽子構造を探り内部クォーク・グルーオンの分布を定める作業を進めている。研究を拡張して、より広い運動量移行領域での断面積測定を進め、現在論文を準備している。また、電子・陽子散乱で生成される多くの生成粒子の相関、多重ジェット生成、回折反応などの現象を調べ、量子色力学のモデルとの比較を行った。
平成13年度から始まる縦偏極電子と陽子との散乱の準備として、電子偏極度の測定装置の開発を進めるとともに、偏極衝突により、超対称性粒子の検出感度がどう変わるかを理論的に定量的に検討できた。電子・陽子散乱用の事象生成プログラムの作成も進み、ベクター中間子生成に関するプログラムを公表できた。
