研究概要

各種大気モデルを用いて、対流圏-成層圏領域に卓越する大規模大気波動の非線型な動態とこれらに伴う物質輸送過程を調べた。また、モデルによる長時間数値積分データと観測データを総合的に解析することにより、波動の動態の季節依存性や年々変動、経年変化の特性を明らかにした。
1.モデル開発
さまざまなジオメトリ上の地球流体方程式をスーパーコンピューター上で効率良く解くための数値計算ライブラリの整備を行った。また、その応用として、2次元球面上の減衰性乱流や、浅水方程式での重力波の射出問題などに関する研究を行った。
2.プラネタリー波・傾圧不安定波の力学
パラメータスウィープ実験で得た長期間データをさらに統計解析し、成層圏突然昇温現象に対する赤道QBOの影響を調べた。昇温事象が起こる頻度だけでなく、起こった事象の特徴についても、赤道域の東西風強制に対する依存性を見いだした。多数のアンサンブルを基に事象の統計的有意性に関する議論も行なった。
気象庁の一ヶ月アンサンブル予報結果を解析した結果、成層圏突然昇温現象は少なくともその発生の2週間程度以前から予測可能であり、その前駆現象として対流圏内におけるダブルジェット構造の形成が重要であることがわかった。
3.赤道域重力波の力学
メソスケール気象モデルを高度100kmまで伸ばしたシミュレーションにより、積雲対流により励起されるメソスケール重力波が上方伝播して中間圏界面付近で砕波する過程を、世界で始めて再現した。
