日本列島を狭む2定点での生物粒子生成による二酸化炭素の固定と深層への輸送機構

研究概要

研究は当初の計画通りに行われた。
二酸化炭素は生物の成長に使われて体内に取り込まれて粒子の形になり、深海に向かって沈降して海底に堆積する。この沈降する粒子量を実測することは地球温暖化問題を考える時、不可欠なことである。
(1)西部太平洋:沈降粒子試料は北緯44度、東経155度の測点(St.KNOT)において、1999年10月25日から2001年6月20日まで、約2年間、一ヶ月間隔で時間分画式セジメントトラップにて採取された。2000年と2001年春に大きな粒子量を観測した。同時にオパール量も増加した。すなわち、沈降粒子量の変動は海洋表層の基礎生産と相関のある事が示された。全期間を通して、有機炭素沈降量は窒素同位体と負の相関、陸起源粒子と正の相関が見られた。この結果から、研究海域が鉄制限であることが初めて実証された。粒子の有機炭素/無機炭素比は平均で1.9であった。これは他の海域に比べて高かった。西部北太平洋は世界的にみて、生物ポンプ能力(二酸化炭素を固定する効率)が高いことが明らかになった。
(2)日本海:北緯39度30分、東経136度30分(水深2675m)と北緯38度00分、135度00分(水深2900m)の2点に設置したセジメントトラップを揚収した。全粒子束は11月から1月の冬期間、4月から5月の春季に大きかった。全期間を通じての平均は250mg/m2/dayであった。これは、生物生産が大きな北西部太平洋の2倍程であった。季節変動を見ると、11月から12月の冬期間と4月から5月の2期間で大きな値を観測した。全平均は70mg/m2/dayであり、全体の30%を陸起源粒子が占めていた。日本海が陸起滑粒子の供給澹であるアジア大陸に近いことを反映していた。
