研究概要	蚕は桑の葉を食べて成長し繭を生産することは我々の常識であるが、交配育成されたある種の蚕は平面状の繭(絹不織布:「蚕繭紙」と命名)を生産することができる。この蚕繭紙は優雅な外観や優しい感触を有しており、さらに、皮膚親和性などの優れた生体適合性も期待される。高齢化社会への移行に伴う老人医療・介護には多くの問題が存在するが、寝たきり老人の数も年々増加している現在、床擦れなどのいわゆる皮膚障害も大きな問題となっている。蚕繭紙はその優雅な外観や感触の良さを活かして、芸術、クラフトや高級被服への応用展開は既にスタートしていたが、生体関連材料への進展は手付かずの状態にあった。絹不織布には上述の問題を克服しうる素材としての期待が高くもてることから本計画を企図するに至った。各分担者の協力を得て、蚕が直接生産する絹不織布が予想通りの優れた生体適合性を有するか否かを判定し、さらにこの特性を応用して、創傷被覆材、さらに進んで人工皮膚素材の開発を行うことを目標として検討を行い、本年度は本課題およびその関連領域で以下の成果を得た。成果の概要を述べる。絹不織布試料として、上述の蚕繭紙以外に、通常の蚕が生産する普通の繭から繊維集合体を得た後、不織布の製造工程(ニードルパンチ法)を経て不織布が調製された。両試料についてウサギによる動物実験を行った結果、何れの不織布も優れた生体適合性を示すこと見出した。さらに、異物反応もごく軽度であり、創傷の治癒(皮膚再生)に寄与することが判明し、創傷被覆材、人工皮膚素材などとして有望であることが分かった。
