ツリウム・ヘキサボライド(TmB_6)による四重極相互作用研究の新展開

研究概要

本研究は、最近多大の注目を集めている四重極相互作用に関し、実験的側面からその本質に迫ることを目的として行われた。最近の四重極相互作用の研究で注目を集めている物質の一つはCeB_6であり、この四重極相互作用を担っている4f電子はCeあたり1個である。一方Tmは4f電子を13個もっており、f状態が14個の電子で一杯になることを考えると、CeとTmとは互いに相補的関係にあるわけで大変重要な研究課題である。しかしながら、TmB_6は常温・常圧では存在が確認されていない物質である。そこでCeB_6はLaによる希釈でも近藤シングルイオン的性格が変わらず、むしろそれらの混晶系で四重極相互作用に関するいろいろな新しい知見が得られることから、このようなCe_xLa_<1-x>B_6に対比させ得る物質としてのTm_xLa_<1-x>B_6の研究が重要であるとの結論に達し、本研究の目的を達成するための対象物質とした。このような混晶を作る際には均一な組成のものを得るために注意が必要であり、特にLaB_6のようなコングルエント・メルト系の物質とTmB_6のようなインコングルエント・メルト系との混晶の場合、特別な注意を要する。我々は既にこの問題をクリアし、Tm_xLa_<1-x>B_6の内、x=0.1及び0.25の大型単結晶をフローティング・ゾーン法により作成に成功した。さらにTm_xYb_<1-x>B_6(x=0.1及び0.25)の作成にも成功しており、X線による解析では単結晶がヘキサボライド系であり、純良結晶であることが判明した。また、電気抵抗・比熱の測定も進行中であり、中性子散乱実験も計画している。
