研究概要	杉谷はマウナケア天文台のハワイ大学2.2m望遠鏡でブライトリム分子雲に付随するYSOクラスターの近赤外線撮像観測を行った。米倉はESOの15m電波望遠鏡(SEST)で高銀緯赤外線点源に対する分子雲観測を行なった。これらの観測により、星の生まれる直接の場となる「高密度分子ガス塊」および星の誕生に伴う質量放出現象である「分子流天体」を捕らえることができた。定金、比田井は、北京天文台興隆観測所の2.16反射望遠鏡クーデ焦点でエシェル分光器により金属欠乏星の分光観測を行い10数個の星の良質なスペクトルを得た。川口はIRAM30m電波望遠鏡を用いて、系外銀河NGC253とM82でチオホルムアルデヒド分子(H2CS)の探査を行った。NGC253ではスペクトル線がはじめて検出され、オルト・パラ比は高温極限の値より小さいため、分子が低温ダスト起源であることがわかった。高野、鷹野はオーストラリア国立電波観測所のパークス電波天文台の64m電波望遠鏡にて、アンモニア分子を系外銀河NGC4945, Cirsinus, LMCで検出する観測を行なった。観測した線スペクトルの強度比から、アンモニアガスの過去の生成時の温度が解明できる。土居は高赤方偏移超新星探査でCHFTの12kカメラによる撮像、およびKECK LRISによる分光観測に参加した。比較的近いz=0.55, z=0.88 の2個の超新星のスペクトルを確認した。中島、研究協力者大薮は自作の観測機器をオーストラリアの望遠鏡に搭載することを予定している。渡航した大薮は、望遠鏡と観測装置のインターフェ-スを行なうソフトウェアの開発を行なった。水野はエジプトの国立天文学・地球物理学研究所附属コッタミア観測所の188cm望遠鏡を用いて楕円銀河を観測する予定であったが、観測期間前に望遠鏡の主鏡サポートが故障し、観測できなかった。水野は主鏡サポートシステムの故障原因解明のための調査をし、結果を研究所に提出した。山田はカナリア諸島ラパルマ天文台2.6m Nordic Optical 望遠鏡を用いて、赤方偏移の大きな2型クェーサーの深撮像観測を行った。
