研究概要	乱流研究にはいま新しい展開のきざしが現れている。それは,乱流の「分子」とでもいうべき基本構造の存在が確認され,その物理特性が明らかになりつつあることによる。壁乱流の流れ方向渦,自由剪断乱流のロールやリブ,そして等方乱流のワーム,等々である。これらは細長く管状に集中した旋回渦で,最近の大規模で高精度名乱流の数値シミュレーションによって,その物理的特性が定量的に明らかになってきた。乱流はこれらの管状旋回渦を基本構造として構成されているとみなすことができる。その物理的性質と相互作用を明らかにすることを目指して,本研究班では,将来特定領域研究を立ち上げるための組織作りを行い,実際に「乱流要素渦による乱流理論・予測・制御の新展開」と題して特定領域Bに申請した。平成11年10月8日〜10日には,京都大学数理解析研究所で「乱流の統計性質と構造に基づくその動力学的記述」と題する研究集会,平成12年1月11日に東京工業大学百年記念館で,研究班の企画調査会議を開催し,研究発表,討論および今後の方針について議論を行った。本研究班の研究成果をまとめた研究成果論文集150頁にまとめた。
