レーザーMBE法と基板方位制御による低次元量子スピン系人工格子の創製

研究概要

原子層制御可能な人工格子技術と基板面方位(結晶面制御)を制御することにより、スピン・電荷の制御を実施した。特に、(110)方向に積層成長させた人工格子により、スピンのストライブ構造(1次元鎖)や梯子格子等の新らしい低次元量子スピンを実現することができた。
これまで酸化物において、スピンパイエルス転移は、CuGeO_3やNaV_2O_5等限られた物質にしか存在が報告されていなかった。本研究により、これらスピンパイエルス系およびハルデンギャップを有する物質等の低次元スピンに特徴的な物性を示す、新規な酸化物を創製が可能であることを実証することができた。
具体的な結果を以下に示す。我々が開発、改良したレーザーMBE法により、原子・分子スケールでペロブスカイト結晶構造を有する強磁性体および非磁性体(誘電体)の交互積層構造をもつ酸化物人工格子を合成した。特にスピン配列制御の成果として、SrRuO_3/SrTiO_3(110)およびSrRuO_3/BaTiO_3(110)人工格子において、1次元に固有の磁気特性(ハイゼンベルグ反強磁性)と輸送特性(モット転移として知られる金属-絶縁体転移)を示すことを世界で初めて示した(Solid State Communicationに掲載)。
さらに、単一結晶内に酸素八面体と四面体が交互配列した(いわば自然超格子)結晶構造をもつスピネル型フエライト薄膜を合成し、そのスピン配列(ランダムネスとフラストレーション)を制御することにより、室温を超える高温状態でのスピングラスを実現させた。加えて、このスピングラス状態を光により励起し、「光銹起磁性」が可能であることを示した。
