研究概要	インターフェロン(IFN)の産生とそれによる細胞応答の制御機構について解析し、いくつかの新しい知見を得た。まず、多くのウイルス感染によって誘導されるIFN-α/β遺伝子の発現誘導にIRFファミリー転写因子であるIRF-3/IRF-7両因子が、ウイルスの種類を問わず普遍的に必須であることを、遺伝子欠損マウスを用いて実証した。恒常的に産生される微量のIFN-α/βのシグナルがIFN-γシグナルの増強に必須であることを見出し、IFN-γ及びIFN-α/β受容体のカベオラ膜分画上での新たなシグナルクロストークのメカニズムを解明した。IFN-γがユビキチン・プロテアソーム系を介してRANKLのシグナル伝達に必須のTRAF6タンパクの分解を促進することを突止め、RANKLとIFN-γによる新しいシグナルクロストークを明らかにし、免疫系によるIFNを介した破骨細胞の分化制御について新知見を得た。転写因子IRF-2がIFN-α/βシグナルの負の制御因子であり、その欠損がCD8^+T細胞異常活性化による自己免疫疾患を発症することを明らかにし、IFN-α/βによる新たなCD8^+T細胞応答の制御を明らかにした。がん抑制因子p53の標的遺伝子として2つの新規遺伝子を発見し、そのひとつである新規Bcl-2ファミリー因子Noxaがp53依存性アポトーシスを担っている証拠を得た。これらの発見により、IFNによる多彩な分子制御機構を明らかにすると共に、恒常的に産生される微量のIFN-α/βによる"subthreshold signaling"が多彩な細胞応答を制御しているという新しい事実が判明した。
