研究概要	サンゴの白化現象は共生している光合成生物(共生藻)の色素の退色あるいは脱離によっておこることが知られており、気候変動や海水温度上昇によって引き起こされる地球規模の現象である。本研究課題では三カ年計画でサンゴ礁環境の動態を調査する一方で、1998年の大量白化現象の時に見いだされた白化の種特異性を手がかりに生理、生化学、生態学的に白化の機構解明と回復の方策を見いだすことを目的とした。沖縄近海でサンゴの白化状態を詳細に調査した結果、同一海水温度環境下でも、地域によって白化の度合いが著しく異なっていることが明らかとなった。この現象を海水流速差で説明するために、受動拡散率の違いに着目した物理的モデルを構築し、実際の白化との関連を検討した。その結果、沖縄で起きた1998年の大規模白化に、海水表面温度の上昇と海水流速の低下が関与していることを支持する証拠を得た。また、クロロフィル蛍光を用いた生理的測定により、共生藻の高温に対する耐性能が、深い場所に生息しているサンゴより浅瀬のサンゴの方が高い事が示された。このことは、高温に対するサンゴの応答が共生藻によって決定されていることを示唆している。
