a lecture on Geolinguistic map-drawing at the request of Dr. Endo Mitsuaki and Dr. Tran Tri Doi at Hanoi National University in December last year. In the same month, I conducted an introductory lecture on Historical Linguistics at the Saga Prefectural High School. In terms of publications, I completed two articles that were reviewed and accepted for publication last year. The first is entitled : "Rebooting the Vernacular in 17^<th> Century Vietnam, " forthcoming in the edited volume Rethinking East Asian Languages, Vernaculars, and Literacies, 1000-1919, and published by Brill (2014). The second article is entitled "Crisis in the Cosmopolitan : A Vietnamese Attempt to Create a Non-Latin Alphabet, " submitted as part of an edited volume under the auspices of the University of British Columbia and the Academy for Korean Studies. I conducted one short research trip to Cornell University in May of 2013 in order collect materials from the Kroch Asia Library and one short research trip to Washington D. C. in November of 2013 in order to research ancient Vietnamese texts held at the Library of Congress. I also conducted one major data collection trip to Vietnam in Feb-March of 2014, in order to gather recorded data on one variety of the Muong language called "Choi." 隠す

今後の研究の推進方策 |
One major area in which I hope to expand is in research on the spread of rice & millet agriculture and vocabulary in prehistoric Asia. Last March, I attended and participated in an international symposium on the linguistic, genetic, and archaeological history of millet in East Asia (headed by Dr. Whitman at NINJAL), and as a result, hope to contribute to that group's cutting edge research on the topic. I have tentatively agreed to research and write a short paper on the history of millet vocabulary in Austroasiatic languages. This is an excellent area in which to expand from my current research, since Viet-Muong languages belong to the Austroasiatic family. I would also like to expand my work on East Asian scripts. I spent more time than expected on the history of script in Vietnam this past year ; however, this was a fruitful development of my research, and I look forward to exploring the intersection of historical linguistics and the history of writing in East Asia in the future.
