研究概要	本領域は総括班と4つの計画研究班及び公募研究から構成され、緊密な連絡の下に領域全体および各班の研究目標を達成するように推進された。各研究班の研究成果の概要は以下の通りである。 (総括班)1)総括班実施メンバーにより計画研究項目の内容に関して最新の調査点検議論を実施した。2)国内外における本領域課題に関する研究集会へ出席し情報収集・議論を実施した。3)第1回公開シンポジウムを7月15〜16日につくば国際会議場において開催した。4)合同班会議を平成15年1月9〜11日に島市東レ研修センターにおいて開催した。5)第2、3回総括班会議を平成14年7月14日(於つくば市)及平成15年1月9日(於三島市)開催した。6)計上備品を予定研究機関に設置し次年度の速やかな計画研究開始の準備を完了した。 (A01班・RNPマシーン)リボソーム研究においては、ペプチド転移及び解離因子による翻訳終結の分子機構等のRNA触媒に関する研究がリボソームの立体構造を基盤として進展した。中村らが機能的な研究によって発見したペプチド・アンチコドン(仮説)がクリオ電子顕微鏡解析によって構造的に実証された。 (A02班・RNA制御スイッチ)、分裂酵母におけるアンチザイムのフレームシフト研究、植物シスタチオニンγ-シンターゼのmRNA分解制御の研究、再構成系を用いた転写開始複合体の分離解析、tRNA擬態領域の作用部位の解明等、翻訳機構を中心としたRNA制御シグナルの研究が進展した。 (A03班・動くRNA)神経特異的RNA結合蛋白質Huの多量体形成能とリボソーム相互作用の発見、クロモドメイン蛋白質の線虫始原生殖細胞の増殖制御機能の発見、スプライシングとmRNA核外輸送のカップリング等に関する分子基盤が明らかにされた。 (A04班・高次複合系RNA動態)脆弱X症候群のモデル系としてFMR1相同遺伝子(dfmr1)欠失ショウジョウバエの作成により概日リズムの異常を発見し、dfmr1蛋白質がリボゾーム蛋白質とRNA interference (RNAi)関連因子と相互作用することを示した。ミトコンドリアtRNA遺伝子の変異による「ミトコンドリア病」の病態モデルマウスを樹立し、核DMAの変異が「ミトコンドリア病」の臨床症状の多様性に関与することを明らかにした。
