研究概要	レーザー蒸発法により直径を制御した高純度の単層カーボンナノチューブを合成し、それをさらに高度に精製することにより、様々な物性を調べた。 1.高度に精製された単層カーボンナノチューブでは、価電子帯光電子分光測定が可能であることを示し、初めて1次元ファンホーベ特異点を光電子分光により確認した。さらに、フェルミレベル近傍の状態密度が結合エネルギーのべきに比例して変化するだけでなく、フェルミレベルの状態密度も温度のべきで変化することを見いだし、その係数がどちらもほぼ0.46となり、理論計算による予測とぴったり一致することを見いだした。これにより、ナノチューブのバンドルが理想的な1次元金属として振る舞うことを証明したことになる。この成果は、Natureに掲載された。 2.上記の1次元物性の解明において、ナノチューブが束を形成していることが、最終的な問題として残った。そこで、アルコールCVD法により孤立ナノチューブを合成し、その光物性を調べた。ラマンスペクトルにおいて、低波数域に観測されるラジアルブリージングモードの線幅が1.5cm-1以下と極めて狭く、バンドル固有のラインも観測されないことがわかり、ラマン散乱・光吸収における選択則に関する知見を得た。 3.ナノチューブに水を内包する系では、内部の水が低温でナノチューブを形成することがこれまでにわかっていたが、さらにナノチューブの直径を変えることにより、その凝固点が大きく変化することがわかった。細いナノチューブの内部では、細い氷のチューブが形成されるが、直径が細くなるにつれ、凝固点は上昇し、直径1.2nmのカーボンナノチューブ内部に形成される氷のナノチューブの凝固点は、室温付近まで上昇することが明らかになった。これは、常圧の水の凝固点としては、これまで達成されていない高温の氷ということになり、水の物性を知る上で、極めて重要な結果である。
