研究概要

ヒマラヤの氷河では、夏のモンスーンによる積雪量が年間量の大部分を占めるため、氷河変動が温暖化に鋭敏で、近年の氷河縮小の加速傾向が他地域よりも強いことが観測されている。本研究は氷河縮小の実態の比較解析と、モンスーン型氷河の縮小機構の解明を主目的として実施している。
今年度の現地調査は、モンスーンの影響が最も強いヒマラヤ東部のブータンと、1970年代以来氷河変動を継続的に観測しているネパールで実施した。また衛星画像の解析なども行った。
ブータン・ヒマラヤではブータン地質調査所と共同で、2002年秋と2003年秋に設置した2カ所の自動気象観測装置からデータを回収し、氷河域での通年データを取得した。また氷河の融解量と流動量および氷河湖の変化を求めるため、昨年秋に氷河上に設けた多数の観測点を再測量した。それらから、末端に大きな氷河湖を持つ氷河は、末端部で減速せずに湖へ氷を分離・流出するため、氷河の後退・表面低下を湖が促進し、そのため湖自体も拡大することなど、興味深い成果が得られた。衛星画像解析では、氷河融解量の分布を求める手法を、現地での同期観測により発展させた。
今後も衛星画像などを活用して、ここ約半世紀にわたる広域的な氷河変動解析を進める。
