鉄同位体組成分析による地圏/水圏―生物圏相互作用の解明

研究概要

申請者らは,現世や過去の地質試料の鉄同位体組成の大枠を確立し,それにより全地球史を通じての地圏/水圏と生物圏の相互作用を解明することを目的として,本研究を進行させている.現在次のような成果を得つつある.
(1)第四紀の陸上温泉活動に伴って,バクテリアなどが関与して生成した堆積性鉄鉱床(群馬鉄山)に,通常の地球化学的分別過程では説明がつかないほど大きな同位体分別を受けた鉄が存在していることを発見した.現在までに報告されている同位体分別としては最大のものである.昨年6月に本研究結果をScience誌に投稿したが,長期間の査読の結果,最終的に受理されなかった.しかし,結果の重要性に鑑みて,査読者の意見に従い論文を修正し,近日中にScience誌に再投稿するつもりである.
(2)群馬鉄山と同様の成因で生成した鉄鉱床(長崎県佐世保周辺地域)に,やはりおおきな鉄同位体分別が存在することを見出した.本鉱床においても,顕微鏡観察において,様々なバクテリアが確認された.また本鉱床では,はじめて軽い同位体異常が見つかった.現在分析精度を上げて,再測定している.
(3)西オーストラリアのHamersley地域の縞状鉄鉱層については,それほど大きな同位体分別がないことを確認した.現在国際誌への投稿を準備中である.
(4)鉄還元菌(Shewanella putrefaciens, Geobacter sulfurreducens)の培養実験により,分析に必要な量以上の鉄を沈殿させることに成功した.現在この沈殿物の鉄同位体組成を分析している.
