研究概要

本研究課題は、地球上で唯一存在するオーロラ帯の「昭和基地-アイスランド共役点」において、太陽活動の極大期におけるオーロラの微細構造とダイナミックスを高精度で同時観測する。この南北同時観測記録より、オーロラ動形態の南北両半球の対称性・非対称性を定量的に解析し、オーロラの発生・加速機構を観測事実から明らかにすることが主な研究目的である。
本年度は9月の秋分期にアイスランドの4箇所(Husafell, Tjornes, Raufarhofn, Grimsstadir)に高感度オーロラTVカメラを設置し、昭和基地とのオーロラ同時観測を実施した。参加者は4名であり、アイスランド滞在中の前半は国内に3箇所ある超高層現象モニタリング装置の点検・整備作業を実施し、その後、4箇所に別れてのオーロラ集中観測を実施した。快晴日は例年より少ない3晩のみであり、1晩は昭和基地との同時観測に成功した。
また、12月の冬至付近の最も暗夜が長い時期に、アイスランドに設置してある英国レスター大学の大型短波レーダーと可視オーロラとの同時観測の目的で、Tjornesにて高感度オーロラTVカメラ観測を実施した。異常気象と思える好天に恵まれ、10晩の観測期間中に7晩が快晴であり、活発なオーロラを観測することができた。
解析研究としては、2000年9月30日に観測された典型的なWestward Traveling Surge, Auroral Beakup, Pulsating Auroraの共役性・非共役性を詳しく解析し、興味深い結果が得られつつある。特に、Pulsating Auroraが非共役性を示す特性は、発生機構として電離圏が大きな役割を演じていることを示唆している。
