本研究は、インターネット・マルチメディアを用いた日本語教育実践の可能性と日本語学習への効果を、心理学、コミュニケーション学、教育学等の人間科学的観点から実証的に検討することを目的とした。近年、日本語教育の領域において、インターネットやマルチメディア等の新しい電子メディアを活用して、効果的・効率的な教育を行っていくことが期待されているが、本研究では、インターネット・マルチメディアが生み出す様々な情報検索・統合・発信やコミュニケーションの方法がどのような日本語教育実践を可能にするのかを探索的に検討するとともに、どのような学習効果をもたらすのかに関して実証的に明らかにした。具体的には、次のような活動を行った。1.世界の異なる地域の大学の日本語学習者を対象とし、電子掲示板、メーリングリスト、ビデオ会議などの異なるコミュニケーション手段が、日本語の授業において、どのような教育目的・カリキュラムと結びつけて用いられ、どのような教育実践として実現可能であるのかについて、各々のクラス活動やインターネット上の相互作用過程を縦断的に観察・記録することにより検討した。2.インターネットを利用したコミュニケーション手段を日本語の授業に取り入れることが、学習者の日本語の表記、語句、文法、文章構造、文章スタイル、コミュニケーション過程にどのような影響をもたらすのかについて実験を行い、インターネットを用いた日本語教育実践の日本語学習への効果を検討した。3.マルチメディアの日本語学習支援システムを開発し、教室内とインターネット上での日本語学習と組み合わせて使用することにより、どのような学習効果をもたらされるのかについて調べた。4.収集したデータの分析結果をもとに、新しい日本語学習教材・カリキュラムの可能性について検討するとともに、日本語教育におけるインターネットとマルチメディアの利用法について考察した。5.研究成果を、学会誌・学会発表・研究発表会等により公表した。
