研究実績の概要

This research program consists on a multidisciplinary research concerning habitat for the elderly and, more specifically, cultural patterns and correlations between the characteristics of design projects, the practices of housing, spatial experiences of people, their quality of life and the aging process. In this light and using qualitative and quantitative methods, the goal of my research is to explore the impact and potential of design projects in improving the quality of life of older people and maintaining their health status. I’m also interested in the influence the space has on their sense of well-being. On one hand, I analyse current living conditions of different populations of the elderly, and on the other hand, I study retirement homes to which they have access, the mechanisms influencing the architectural design of these homes, their daily functioning, the quality of life they provide, etc. One of the original features of the research lies in the desire to see “how does the habitat for the elderly may evolve in a complex and diverse society?” “How can we ensure the best quality of life for older people who do not have enough of financial means to "buy" themselves a good old age in comfortable and safe conditions?” My achievements to date regarding this research project include data collected in Japan, Poland and Hong Kong, four published conference papers (peer-reviewed), an invited seminar presentation in France, two journal papers in preparation, as well as few future papers in progress.

理由

In progress as scheduled: The kakenhi grant for 2014 allowed me to realise research field in Poland, in a public senior housing, and in Hong-Kong, in different public senior houses designed either for rich elderly people or for poor elderly people. With the kakenhi 2014, I could also participate and present two peer-reviewed conference papers at the most important international conferences related to housing: European Network for Housing Research (ENHR) 2014 Conference, Edinburgh, 1-4 July 2014 (paper title : Senior Friendly Challenges at the Crossroad of Correlations between Design, Spatial Experiences & the Quality of Life: the Case of Tama New Town) and XVIII ISA World Congress of Sociology, Yokohama, 13-19 July 2014 (paper title: Emerging Dimensions of Senior Friendly Built Environment in Aging Societies).
The first results of the field research realised with the kakenhi 2014 presented in a peer-reviewed conference paper have been recently accepted for the oral presentation at the European Network for Housing Research (ENHR) 2015 Conference (paper title : Public retirement homes in Hong Kong: the challenge of architectural innovation or the socio-economic reality?)

今後の研究の推進方策

(1) The kakenhi is indispensable to continue to realize the research plan in order to get wide global results concerning the future of senior housing issues, their cultural patterns and current problems. Since one year, the research field in Philippines has been planned and senior housing is appointed to realize interviews with residents, analyze architectural typologies according to cultural aspects, as well as to 9 dimensions defined in the research plan. Unfortunately, the amount of the 2014 kakenhi grant was not enough to realize this research field, but I hope it will be possible in the next months with kakenhi 2015.
(2) Participating and presenting results of the research at the high level academic conferences or meetings in order to share the research, have discussions with other specialist working on similar subjects as well as to know what are the current research issues in this area on a global scale, how they are realized and to what results do they lead. Recently, my peer-reviewed paper has been accepted for the European Network for Housing Research (ENHR) 2015 Conference (paper title: Public retirement homes in Hong Kong: the challenge of architectural innovation or the socio-economic reality?) and I hope I will be able to participate at this conference.
