Extended, ultrathin graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with width of ca. 0.8 nm were successfully prepared inside the carbon nanotube (CNT). This is achieved through vacuum annealing of coronene-filled CNTs at high temperature. Transformation of the precursor molecules into the extended ribbons was confirmed using high resolution transmission electron microscope. Besides, the GNRs fabricated show a lower on-state Raman resonance energy, implying the extension of pi-conjugation. When the outer surface of the CNTs were treated with diazonium salts, an optical band gap of 1.6 eV was observed for the inner GNRs, in good qualitative agreement with the first principles calculations.
