シリア・デデリエ洞窟調査:ネアンデルタール人骨の発掘

研究概要

(1)洞窟地帯堆積物シークエンスの確認
デデリエ洞窟ではこれまでの発掘によって、洞窟最奥部ではネアンデルタール人骨をともなった5万年以前の中期旧石器時代、いわゆるMousterian時代の堆積物が、洞窟のエントランス部では1万年以前の更新世から完新世への移行期時代、いわゆるNatufian時代の堆積物が確認されている。この両者の堆積物相互の関連性および当洞窟全体の地層堆積物のシークエンスを確認するために、今年度から、洞窟の南北方向に2メートル幅、約60メートルのトレンチを設定し、組織的な発掘にはいった。

2001年度調査中に発見された化石人骨については、それが、同洞窟第1号ネアンデルタール埋葬人骨と同一層(第11層)であり、また発見された状況から再び埋葬人骨の可能性があり、その取り上げについては極めて慎重・注意深い作業が肝要と判断し、今年度はその発掘は中止し、人骨を中心とする部分の堆積物に関する精査・記録作業に取り組んだ。
(3)第1号ネアンデルタール埋葬人骨の三次元復元
類例が無いほどに良質な状況で発見された当洞窟第1号ネアンデルタール埋葬人骨のX線CT計測、データ処理及び三次元画像復元を実施した。同研究は、海外共同研究者である。C.P.E.Zollikofer及びM.S.Ponce de Leon Tapiaが所属するスイス・チューリッヒ大学マルチメディア研究室で実施した。同研究結果によって、同ネアンデルタール人骨の交連骨格精密復元が実現した。
