研究概要

本研究計画は、国際中央海嶺研究計画InterRidgeを推進するために、InterRidge国際分担金(InterRidge事務局の運営資金として20000ドル〜25000ドル/年を拠出)の支払い、日本人研究者の国内外の中央海嶺研究航海派遣旅費、InterRidgeの主催する国際研究集会への日本の研究者の派遣旅費、および外国人研究者の招聘旅費に使用された。本科学研究費研究計画によって、日本は、米、英、独、仏の各国と並んで、総参加国29か国におよぶInterRidgeのPrincipal Member国として、その推進に中心的な役割を果たしてきた。InterRidge運営委員会には、本研究計画研究分担者のうち2名が委員として参画している。本研究計画の実施期間中に、西太平洋、北東太平洋、インド洋の中央海嶺および背弧海盆において、計14航海に日本人研究者、学生を派遣し、中央海嶺研究をグローバルに推進した。対象とした研究分野は、海洋地質学、海洋地球物理学、海洋化学、海洋生物学、海中工学の多岐にわたる。中でも、熱水噴出域の海水化学、海洋微生物学、探査工学の研究において、世界をリードする成果を得たことが特筆される。西太平洋マリアナトラフでは、AUV(無人潜水艇)に搭載した三成分磁力計観測により、熱水活動の規模に対応した、海底地殻の磁化減衰現象を発見した。北東太平洋ファンデフカ海嶺では深海掘削により、中央海嶺を起点とする大規模な地殻内の流体の流れを発見し、中央海嶺域広域の海水循環システムの研究に新展開をもたらした。超低速拡大海嶺である南西インド洋海嶺における日仏共同研究では、マントル物質の広範な露出によって拡大がまかなわれていることを明らかにした。2006年に実施した中央インド洋海嶺における潜水調査航海では、熱水域の微生物試料および硫化物鉱物試料の系統的な採取に成功している。
