研究概要	本年度は、計画どおりトンガ王国において集中調査を行うとともに、インドネシアにおいて予備調査を行った。トンガ王国の首都近郊に位置するコロバイ地域において、住民の居住歴を含む基本情報の把握とともに、集中的な健康調査を実施した(代表者、5名の分担者、及び2名の協力者)。健康調査は、18歳以上の住民228名(平均年齢45.1歳)に対し、生体計測、血圧測定、エネルギー代謝、経口糖負荷試験、採血、採尿、食習慣調査などを行った。血液試料などは現在も分析中であるが、現時点で明らかになっている主要な成果は以下のとおりである。Body Mass Index (BMI:体重(kg)/身長(m)^2)の平均値は男性で30.4、女性で33.6であり、女性で有意に高かった。男性の平均値も、WHOによる「肥満」(obesity)のカテゴリーにはいっていた。胴囲/腰囲の平均値は男性で0.94、女性で0.90であり、年齢とともに増加する傾向がみられた。2型糖尿病の割合は対象者の5.7%であり、空腹時血糖試験および75g糖負荷後2時間値から糖尿病と判断されたのは6.1%、それ以外で糖耐能異常を示したのは10.5%であった。糖尿病および糖耐能異常の有無とBMI、胴囲、胴囲/腰囲等の肥満の指標には有意な関連がみられ、特に腹部の脂肪が糖耐能異常のリスクとなっていることが示唆された。当初(計画調書作成段階)は、平成15年度にインドネシアのアンボン地域とジャヤプラ地域での調査を予定していたが、同国の政情不安と平成15年度に総選挙が行われるため、同国における調査を平成14年度にスンバ地域で行うことが適切と判断し、インドネシアでの調査経験が豊富な分担者の石田が予備調査を行い、平成14年度にスンバの2地域で調査を実施する準備を整えた。
