近年、世界各地で発生する民族紛争とその解決に向けた研究が重要な研究動向の一つとなってきている。本研究では、紛争解決に大きな役割をはたすと考えられる民族的共生のメカニズムを文化人類学的視点から実証的、科学的に検証し、明らかにしようとするものである。このため、アイヌの文化復興運動、政治-経済的要求と法的解決、さらにその後の運動の展開に見られる民族的共生の「語り」と実践について、フィールド調査を通した祭礼への参加、観察、および詳細なインタビュー調査を行い、カメラ、VTR、テープレコーダによる記録、整理、分析を行った。特にアイヌの死の儀礼の復興を広い意味での民族間の紛争とその解決の過程として捉え、人類学的視点から葬儀とそれをめぐるさまざまな語りの分析を行った。その結果、(1)アイヌ式葬儀の復興が民族的帰属性の実践として行われたこと、(2)紛争の解決には共生という理念が働いたこと、そして、(3)民族的共生の形成にとって行為主体の役割りが重要であったこと、が明らかにされた。これらの成果については、第15回国際人類学民族科学会議、「民族紛争と紛争解決」分科会(International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences. Section : Ethnic Conflicts and Conflict Resolutions)(平成15年7月5日〜7月12日、フローレンス大学)において研究発表、討論を行い、民族的共生のメカニズムに関する研究の文化人類学的研究全体の中での理論的位置づけを行った。
