研究実績の概要

The purpose of the research has been to explore the interrelationship among political economy, human trafficking, human security and gender, especially how contemporary political economic system, or in other words, how globalization causes gender sensitive human insecurity through exacerbating human trafficking in Asia.
In order to achieve the purpose, literature review has been undertaken through examining scholarly books and journal articles on the relevant concepts. In addition, some interviews have been conducted with NGOs, for example with Light House Japan in Tokyo to see the applicability of the conceptual framework with regard to the case. In this process, a draft paper was written which was presented at the Annual Convention of International Studies Association in New Orleans, USA on 20 February, 2015. The presentation was entitled “The Political Economy of Human Trafficking: The Case of Japan, Thailand and India.” It was a good opportunity to connect with the scholars from all over the world, and talk as well as interview with them during the conference, which would help to enrich the paper from both theoretical and empirical perspectives.
In addition, lecture on human trafficking at Coppin State University, Maryland and interview with the Director of Program of Free the Slaves in Washington DC were conducted after the conference. Altogether, the trip in the US was very useful as it helped to communicate with scholars and activists in the same field. Thus, the year 2014 has served as the building bloc of the current research.

理由

Currently, literature review is in progress based on the comments received at the ISA conference as well as discussions with other scholars and activists. This focuses on how the traditional schools of political economy view the problem of human trafficking, and which can better explain the problem in particular.
Simultaneously, the investigation on the causal relationship of political economy, human trafficking and gendered human security has been continued. Thus, the draft paper presented at ISA is still in progress to examine the theoretical significance of the research.
In addition, current research endeavor also includes establishing contacts with various scholars, activists and government officials in the relevant field in order to set up interviews with them as mentioned in the original research plan. Some contacts have been already established with NGOs and government officials in Tokyo and with international organizations in Thailand for upcoming interviews, which hopefully would help to explore the reality of human trafficking on the backdrop of globalization in those areas. Fieldwork in Tokyo and Thailand has been planned ahead in this regard.
As for the fieldwork, semi-structured interview through close/open ended questionnaires, Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and participant observation with anti-trafficking activists, scholars and beneficiaries as well as snowball sampling methods have been planned. In this manner, both theoretical and empirical investigations are in progress.

今後の研究の推進方策

Following the work in progress mentioned above, the future research will focus on ascertaining the causal relationship between analytical framework and the case, in other words, how empirical evidence could be better explained by the framework that would provide the originality of the research.
Hence, it would be important to collect firsthand information in the areas of investigation. In so doing, fieldworks have been planned to analyze the case as mentioned earlier. Fieldworks in late April and early May in Tokyo and in the rest of May of this year in Thailand have been scheduled. As indicated above, scholars from the universities, officials of NGOs and INGOs, government officials such as police and other anti-trafficking activists will be interviewed to get primary information on the research topic. Although it is very difficult to contact trafficked victims, traffickers and/or pimps, the efforts would be given to interview them as well.
After collecting primary information and with a combination of secondary resources, the current draft paper will be revised and prepared for the next presentation that is scheduled for the International Conference on International Migration and Human Security on 29-30 July, 2015 in Zurich, Switzerland.
After the presentation, the 2nd draft paper will be reviewed vigorously in order to get it ready for publication, which will further be continued to update and extend for next academic conference with an aim toward the final publication of the original research planned for this fellowship.
