The purpose of this research is to investigate the role that media plays in Chinese migrants' lives, paying particular attention to how their media use reflects changes in Sino-japanese relations.
Since starting the research project in September, the following research achievements have been accomplished.
1) Dr Coates and I have conducted a literature review on research related to media and migration in Japan. This included searches on migrant representation, migrant media use, and migrant media production. While English language literature on the topic is scarce, there is considerable literature in Japanese. However, there is little written on Chinese migrant media by academic researchers, the majority being from journalists and popular writers
2)In line with this finding, Dr Coates has conducted a series of interviews with two Chinese media producers, who act as both popular writers and journalists. In addition to these interviews, we have commenced interviewing Chinese migrants in Ikebukuro about their everyday media consumption (n=10) and conducted participant observation at a selection of public social gatherings.
3)We organized a highly successful 3 day international conference titled ‘Japan’s New Immigrants’ held at Waseda University in February. The conference featured 28 presenters from Japanese and international universities, with 70 participants from a range of disciplines including sociology, anthropology, media studies, international relations, political science, law and film-making.

理由
The sample of interviews we have collected is lower than initially planned. This is largely due to the number of conferences attended and coordinated over the past 6 months, as well as a series of publication commitments that have already emerged from initial findings.
Finally, some of the interview equipment took longer to acquire than initially planned (camera and sound recording equipment) which delayed interviews by 2 months

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
Heisei 27 (2015): As outlined in the initial research plan, from April onwards we will continue conducting filmed interviews with Chinese migrants on their everyday media usage.
In June 2015 Dr Coates and I are attending the AAS in Asia conference to present together on a panel discussing multiculturalism in Japan.
We are also assisting with the coordination of an international workshop to be held in September in Lisbon in connection with the European Association for Social Anthropology (EASA). Titled ‘Grounding (Im)mobility’ the workshop explores media and material culture approaches to human movement, such as migration, tourism and transport.
Heisei 28 (2016): Work on a full book manuscript developed out of the JSPS funded research
Edit film interview data to create a short documentary (50 minutes) to be showcased at an international conference within the year.
