研究実績の概要 |
My research is aimed at studying the two procedures concerning FDI (foreign direct investment): the determinants of FDI and FDI's impact on host country's economy. By far, I have written three papers (including the draft) in total. The regions of interest include China and Vietnam. For the first procedure: (1) Based on my master thesis, I updated the paper which focuses on the strategic determinant of FDI in China. The paper tries to verify how the establishment of investment promotion agencies (IPAs) affects the decisions of foreign firms regarding their subsequent investment. The result confirms the IPAs’ role in promoting incremental FDI into China. It also provides empirical evidence to the policy makers as what kind of method is efficient to attract FDI.
Concerning FDI' impact, I mainly concentrated on Vietnam and came up with two papers: (1) The first one examines how the origin of foreign firms affects the degree of horizontal and vertical spillovers, using firm-level panel data from Vietnam in 2002-2011. The empirical analysis produces evidence consistent with my hypothesis: preferential treaties in general, promote spillover from foreign firms, while local procurement is the most important channel to incur vertical spillover. (2) In this paper, we apply firm-level panel data in Vietnam and unique information on waste discharge to show that foreign firms are actually more active to acquire ISO14001, a voluntary environmental standard. This paper proves that firms efforts towards corporate social responsibility will eventually benefit themselves as well.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
The progress is almost on schedule. There are several points that I keep in mind when conducting the research: (1) Always make plans on the timeframe. For example, in between April to June, I need to finish the modification of the first paper. Then I use the next two months to finish the draft of the second paper. By the end of 2014, I should have finished literature review and the initial estimation of the third paper. I look back to my original plan from time to time and try to correct for the gap. (2) I actively attend the seminars and workshop both inside and outside Japan. The communication with other scholars in the same field provides me with practical feedbacks, so that I can make considerable improvement on the paper within a short period of time. (3) I have to thank my coauthors for their support. Without their sincere and useful advice, I couldn't have been so efficient. And the discussion with them always motivates me to move forward and overcome the difficulties. These are the most important factors why I can stick to my schedule of the research.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The first direction will be on the Chinese economy. Using the newly collected firm level data in China and more detailed information on investment promotion agency, I would like to verify the impact of this governmental policy from a more thorough perspective. I might check how the establishment of IPAs will affect domestic firms' total factor productivity (TFP) through the channel of FDI, and whether the influence differs across industries and foreign ownership. Meanwhile, I will consider combining the firm level data with customs transaction data. Then I would like to confirm if the credit constraint a firm is faced with will affect the firm's export decision, or the product upgrading. The second series of study will apply the Vietnamese firm level data. The topic that I have in mind at this moment is that how the investment of foreign firms affects the employment level among the local firms. Furthermore, in the presence of FDI, how does it affect the wage level of the domestic firms? These are interesting and important issues that international economists might be concerned about. If necessary, I will go on field study to conduct interviews, e.g. stay in Vietnam and try to have the representatives of the firms fill in the questionnaire. By so doing, it can help me collect more decent data, and understand the background more deeply.
