We have newly developed a behavioral task for rats, cue-combination task. Central for this task is that the correct choice of action should be determined by a combination of sound and odor cues. With performing large-scale single unit recordings in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during this task behavior, we found “combination cells” which significantly increased their firing rates at the time of the presentations of only one of the combination pattern. Most studies of value-based decision making used a simple sensory cue. However, this representation should not be merely a collection of sensory inputs, and little is known about the neural representations for the abstraction guiding decision making. Our results can give the important suggestion to this problem.
