研究実績の概要 |
I finished two manuscripts directly correlated to this research project. I use the difference-in-difference propensity score matching (DD-PSM) to evaluate the impact of highway connection on the industrial development of China's counties, which shapes the first manuscript. I find the highway connection has significant positive impact on related industrial output and investment.
Then, on the second manuscript, I further investigate the impact of highway network in terms of manufacturing employment and firm location choice. Instead of point estimation, I use general OLS estimations with panel data. I try to observe the dynamical highway effects (year-by-year estimation). I find the highway infrastructure has significant regional heterogeneity, which is not observed in first manuscript. For the coastal regions already had high road density, the marginal effect of new highways is no longer considerable.
Except the manuscripts directly connecting to this project, I also finished two preliminary drafts on the impact evaluation of railways (China) and high-speed rails (Japan). Although they are not directly correlated to highways, they provide additional information and evidences for the impact evaluation of highway infrastructure. Moreover, I attended and had talks in a series of academic conferences like Annual World Bank Conference on Development Economics, and European Meeting of Urban Economics Association, which are two important conferences on development and urban economics. Also, I had presentations in seminars like Nagoya University and Kyoto University.

理由
I finished two manuscripts directly correlated to this research project, as I mentioned in the research plan. Although these two manuscripts are still under Revise & Resubmit in peer-review journals, they are expected to be accepted in the near future. Except these two manuscripts, I also finished two preliminary drafts on the impact evaluation of railways (China) and high-speed rails (Japan). Although they are not directly correlated to highways, they provide additional information and evidences for the impact evaluation of highway infrastructure. Moreover, I got an early Ph.D. graduation in March, 2015, six months earlier than the regular Ph.D. course length.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I plan to further polish the finished manuscripts in this year, and try to have two acceptances from peer-review journals at the end of 2015. Then, I plan to have some extension works on the impact evaluation of transportation infrastructure, not limiting only to the highway networks, but also extending to railway and high-speed rail. As these three kinds of transportation infrastructures have different features distinguishing between each other, when evaluating the impact of these infrastructures, it is necessary to capture the unique feature for the targeted one. Since I have already finished two preliminary drafts on the railways and high-speed rail using the case of China and Japan, I intend to polish them, and try to combine the new results into this research project as some additional evidences.
Then, I plan to finish the descriptive summary of my research results in this project, as mentioned in my initial research plan. It is important to clarify the contribution of my research to existing literature, and what should be done in the future research project. Finally, I plan to have some oversea/domestic conference and seminar presentations in this year, which is beneficial for the revision of my own research and my own networking in joint-research.
