植物根-土壌界面における粘液・境界細胞複合体の機能的意義

研究概要	植物の根冠から脱落するBorder cell (境界細胞)は、根圏内において土壌微生物や根冠粘液と混ざり合い、粘液-境界細胞複合体(境界複合体)を形成する。本研究では、根圏土壌中における境界複合体の生態的な意義を多面的に解明することを目的とした。研究を開始するに当たり、研究代表者が海外出張し4ヵ年にわたるプロジェクト全体の計画調整を行うとともに、海外研究協力者のBarlow氏が来日し研究分担者とともに根冠細胞の生産速度に関する実験手法について討論した。初年度の研究では、境界細胞の根圏土壌中における生存期間と崩壊速度を検討した。トウモロコシ根の境界細胞は放出後30日経っても約6%は根圏土壌中に残存していた。次に、播種後1〜5日の間で細胞放出と根圏土壌での残存性について詳細な調査を行った。根冠の大きさは、4日間で約4割も小さくなった。根冠を構成する推定細胞数は、一日目では6,970個であったのに対し、5日目では4,500個まで低下した。境界細胞の24時間残存率は、播種後1日目のもので約60%、2日目が約70%、3日目のものでは約90%と、放出後の日数が進むにつれて増加していた。すなわち、播種直後の1日目では、根冠の表層から崩壊し易い細胞群が根圏土壌中に放出されるが、その後、細胞の生産速度よりも放出量が上回るため、表層下2〜3層目の比較的壊れにくい細胞群が根圏土壌中に放出されると考えることができる。以上の結果から、根冠の内層の比較的崩壊しにくい細胞群も根圏土壌中に放出されるため、それらの境界細胞が根圏土壌中で1ヶ月以上にわたって残存し続けることが明らかとなった。
