Sediments from the Bay of Bengal were measured for elemental, n-alkanes, and stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15Ntot) isotopic compositions to examine the gas hydrate reservoir systems in the oceanic region. The TOC, C/N ratio and isotopic compositions of the studied sediments suggest a mixture of marine and terrestrial derived organic matter. The negative δ13C values also indicate gas hydrate deposits of microbial methane dominant. Sediment accumulation rate and TOC are likely controlled by high crustal materials input in response to uplift of the Himalaya.
