研究実績の概要

As described in the research plan, synthesis of the perylene diimide (PDI) compounds has proceeded. Four classes of compound have successfully been prepared. These are chiral valine PDIs, chiral phenylalanine PDIs, non-chiral anionic PDIs and non-chiral cationic PDIs (numbers of compounds prepared respectively 4, 4, 3 and 2). Initial difficulties in the purification of the anionic and cationic PDIs were overcome and all compounds are available in sufficient quantities and purities for physical analyses to proceed. The compounds have been analyzed using NMR to assess purity, and mass by spectroscopy to confirm identity.
The analysis of the physical properties of the simple compounds has commenced (UV/Vis, fluorescence, CD spectroscopies).

理由

The work is basically proceeding according to schedule. There was a slight difficulty with purification but this has been overcome. The work is now at the stage of performing analysis (as expected) and the materials are available for this purpose.

今後の研究の推進方策

First, one more family of chiral perylene diimides (PDIs) will be prepared using L-leucine as the base. During this synthetic work, analyses of the compounds physical properties will be further commenced. This includes the analysis of lyotropic (i.e. liquid crystalline) properties in the simple PDIs and in their cation-anion complexes and phase diagrams of these will be constructed in water and water-DMSO mixtures. For lyotropic phases, the most appropriate for use in NMR chiral analyses will be identified.
