研究実績の概要 |
During stage 2 the research team continued to collect, revise, and create new content for the teacher-training workshops and the online Teacher Resource Centre (TSC). Responses from interviews, focus groups, and workshop exit questionnaires were analyzed and used to inform the future direction of the research regarding the pedagogical needs of the teachers. The content of the workshop lectures, content-based classes, and skills-based classes were shaped by the participants’ responses. This action research cycle ensured that the practical workshops and TSC meet teachers’ needs. Two teacher-training workshops were held. The focus of the first workshop was on motivation and using authentic materials to help support teachers and students. Japanese junior-high school English teachers and high-school English teachers attended the workshop. The second workshop was held for pre-service English teachers. A professor from the University of British Columbia was invited to teach the students about intercultural communication and critical thinking. The positive feedback from both workshops was used to help create material for future workshops. Both workshops were highly successful and attendees expressed their strong desire to attend future teacher-training workshops.

1: 当初の計画以上に進展している
理由
The research plan is proceeding smoothly. The research team is currently analysing the research data gained from the workshops. The feedback from both workshops provided by the participants was overwhelming positive. The first workshop on motivation and using authentic materials for teaching was attended by 16 students and teachers. At the end of the workshop the participants provided invaluable feedback. The in-service teachers especially liked the practical nature of the workshop and the fact that they could share their ideas and feelings with their fellow teachers. For their part, the pre-service teachers were grateful for the opportunity to meet in-service teachers and to learn more about the practicalities of contemporary pedagogy. They expressed a strong desire for such practical workshops to become part of the university curriculum and specifically part of the teacher license course. Similarly, the second workshop gave the pre-service teachers the chance to consider the practical aspects of English teaching. The research team has written research papers and given presentations based on the teacher-training workshops and the analysis of the data provided by the workshops. Teachers from schools and universities within Japan and abroad have expressed a strong interest in the research project and it is expected that more teachers will attend future workshops.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
During stage 3 of the research project the research team will continue to collect, revise, and create new content for the TSC. Responses from interviews, focus groups, and the exit questionnaires will be analyzed and used to inform the future direction of the research regarding the pedagogical needs of the teachers. The content of the workshop lectures, content-based classes, and skills-based classes will be shaped by the participants’ responses. The action research cycle will ensure that the practical workshops and TSC meet teachers’ needs. The research team will also start to create their planned teacher-support workbooks which will focus on specific aspects of English teaching such as; Listening; Speaking; Writing; Reading; Learner motivation; Learner autonomy; Test-taking skills; Intercultural communication skills; Critical thinking skills; and Presentation skills. Educators from within Japan and abroad will be approached to help with future workshops. Certain expert teachers have already been identified with a view to them participating in the workshops. The research team will continue their efforts to expand the TSC, make the teaching workshops a success, and to create useful teaching material in the form of teaching handbooks.
