研究実績の概要 |
Summary of research achievement: The 2nd year of the project started and we completed Ist year of this research project with achievement of planned activities. We conducted a cross sectional study (sample size=2460) in rural Bangladesh. We did in depth analysis of non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors in this study. The financial condition is better in arsenic exposed population with less duration than the people with more than 10 years exposure. Dietary habits are more irregular with less serving of fruit and vegetables in more than 10 years arsenic exposed population. Smoking to tobacco habit does not depend on the duration of arsenic exposure. The prevalence of obesity in the population who are exposed to arsenic more than ten years is 13.16% which is almost double than the arsenic exposed people of less duration. Diabetes prevalence is about four times higher in more than 10 years arsenic exposed population (13.16%) than in population with less duration of arsenic exposure (4.81%). Among lipid profiles, prevalence of elevated triglyceride levels differs, people with more than 10 years arsenic exposure, the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia is 23.68% which is higher than the prevalence of 15.38% in less duration exposed people. The mean level of both systolic and diastolic pressure is higher in arsenic exposed people of more than 10 years exposure than the less duration arsenic exposed people in rural Bangladesh. The mean levels of arsenic concentration in drinking water did not depend on the duration of arsenic exposure in rural Bangladesh.

理由
The current research is being implemented properly on right track both from the contexts of time line and the amount of research activities scheduled to be done (100% done with target milestone achievement). As mentioned in our original research application, in first year of this project, we already we performed a part of a cross sectional study undertaken in rural Bangladesh to estimate the prevalence of NCD risk factors in arsenic exposed population in rural Bangladesh. For this research, we trained field staffs with questionnaire and the practical training on how to collect drinking water, blood, urine, hair and nail samples of arsenic affected population in rural Bangladesh. We made door to door visit and invited arsenic affected population to join this survey. We could include the planned number of arsenic exposed population in this cross sectional study. We already completed the data entry and made statistical analysis of that cross sectional data. Through the in depth analysis of that cross sectional study, we explored the prevalence of potential NCD risk factors in rural Bangladesh as well as identified the possible risk factors for the development of NCD in arsenic affected population as some of the obtained findings have been stated in research achievement part.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the 2nd year of this project, we will continue the cross sectional study in Bangladesh. In addition, we will conduct a case-control study. A case control study will be performed on 250 diabetic arsenic contaminated and 250 age-matched arsenic contaminated populations in Bangladesh. We will measure arsenic concentration in blood, urine, hair and nail samples of study subjects. Also we will measure arsenic concentration in water in the 2nd year of this project. In this year, a number of advanced biomarkers will be measured in blood sample of study subjects. Besides, data entry and associated analysis will be done simultaneously. The findings will be presented in International Diabetes Federation Western Pacific Region Congress (11th IDF-WPR Congress) in 2017. In 2017, we will continue the rest part of case control study. In 2017, we will perform gene polymorphism and xenobiotic analysis. Overall study results will be analyzed and the findings will be arranged at the publication level. Final data will be presented at Annual Congress of American Diabetes Association in 2018.
