研究実績の概要 |
The research Beyond Corporate Social Responsibility: Social License to Operate, Innovative Partnerships and the Copper Industry, seeks to investigate the emergence of the concept of a ‘Social License to Operate’ and to assess its significance for stakeholders in the extractive industry. In FY 2015, the research has focused mainly on desk-studies of the literature review on the key concepts and the on the overarching theoretical framework. A successful fieldwork period in Mongolia was also undertaken and the three largest mines of the country were visited, as well as the site of several smaller mines. In the capital, interviews were carried out with key policy makers and as such, the case-study of Mongolia is very advanced. Initial results of the research led to the drafting of three papers, which were presented at international conferences throughout the year.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
For FY 2016, the research will continue focus on desk-studies of the literature review and the theoretical framework (April-June 2016) by focusing on the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility & SLO in the particular case of Oyu Tolgoi mine. The (Australia and British) extractive industry company Rio Tinto will be the focus of this case. For this particular aspect of the research, I will continue to work with my research assistants from 2015. Furthermore, I will do another round of fieldwork during the summer (August). I intend to go to Mongolia and to do fieldwork at the site of Oyu Tolgoi mine in the South Gobi region. I also plan on going to Tokyo to interview key respondents on the copper industry and the new bilateral understanding between Japan and Mongolia. During the period of September 2016 to January 2017, my time will be allocated to fieldwork data compilation, data analysis and interview transcriptions. These months will also be allocated to an extensive writing period, which will lead to the publication of two working papers and the submission of a journal article. I will also present papers at two international conferences during the fiscal year: one at the 24th International Political Science Association conference (in July) and one at the 12th International Conference of the International Society for Third Sector Research (in June). I will also endeavor to disseminate and discuss my research with experts in the field such as in Victoria University in May, the Mines and Communities event in Vancouver.
